exclusive mix for RECESS:NEW YORK

hey, my friend Khairi from Puma is a actually a double agent. That Puma stuff is really a front. His life is actually really all about scheduling RECESS [ie. games for all us music-industry New Yorkers to play like ping pong, bowling tourneys and badminton on Governor's Island]. I took the opportunity to break from both my tropical world and soultronica for a diversion into heart-opener midtempo songs that I just want to listen to all the time. It’s a shorty, 30 minute mix. I accidently left it on repeat like 3 times last week and did not get tired of it. This makes me happy.

Distant Lights Vol.5 for Hush Hush Records #soultronica

dj eko, silent disco, djeko, ekogirl, global bass, soultronica, future bass, moombahton, nyc dj, la dj, sf dj, tropical, dj culture, marketing launch dj, soho dj, heartbeatseverywhere, martha stewart, new york dj, okayfuture, hush hush records, hush hush seattle

I’m happy to report I have brethren in Seattle in the form of one Alex Ruder from KEXP.  He has recently started a label called Hush Hush [www.hushhushseattle.com] that features producer Kid Smpl.. who is going to be here in New York for the Red Bull Academy (congrats!). Alex has a mix series at the label called Distant Lights and a sound entitled “Night Bus”, which I love. The sound aesthetic is described as follows:

“Hush Hush Records places a spotlight on the emotional and introspective sound known as “Night Bus,” a multi-genre aesthetic that elaborates on the world of headphones, late-night travels, intimate encounters, and contemplative rides on public transportation.

Let’s get emotional.”

Know what I’m going to say next? Yeah! The Soultronica steeze fits that nicely and he asked me to do a volume for the mix series.  So, for fans of Soultronica and for those of you that enjoyed the pensive/thoughtful/sexy/slow steeze of my volume 3, you might possibly uber-dig Distant Lights vol.5

Reflecting on the spirit of the mix series: Living in NY, my goal was a very tall order: to create a bulletproof halo for riding the New York MTA Subway. Over a month of riding the train I tested out songs. I picked tracks that have the ability to envelop and cloak the listener via headphones, in particular. This is my meditative, sexy buffer from the chaos.

URB Magazine reviews :: Soultronica vol.3 :: dj eko blushes [download]

soultronica, djeko, dj eko, soultronica vol.3, urb magazine, okayplayer

Hot off the heels of a recent feature on Okayplayer, URB Alum, Erica Olsen, otherwise known as DJ Eko has shared her most recent outing– Soultronica Vol 3.

Just what was needed to close out the office night, this mix sent us out floating and into the ether.  Despite the ‘airy-ness’ of the mix, there is a lot going on here, as she has put together a multi-layered effort with her track selection that feels like the ebb and flow of inhaling the world and exhaling art.  While some would dismiss this mix effort as one of the many Valentine’s season mixes that have dropped as of late, there is a penetrating vision displayed here that pushes it over the top of that pile and making it more than just ‘make-out music.’

There’s a lot to like here and when you look at the track list you’ll agree.  Peep the mix and the download at the break.”    -URB Magazine

Tropic of Capricorn vol.1

dj eko, djeko, reggae, ekogirl, soultronica

I have been wanting to do a personal version of a reggae/dancehall mix all season, but I got way too busy. Then, my crate of potential songs got too big. Then I realized that some people dig roots/reggae and some like edgy dancehall but there are clearly people who don’t don’t dig both. I didn’t want to harsh anyones vibe, hence Vol.1 first. When I describe this mix, I’ve been using the terms “weird reggae” & “non-traditional”.

However, the word “weird” is commonly perceived as derogatory. So, I hopped on good ol’ thesaurus.com for synonyms. One of which is the word “magic”. So, this is a mix of MAGIC REGGAE TUNES. Ha ha ha. Which means, songs on here are kinda reggae or are remixed in a reggae style or embody some roots vibe, without being the cliche songs that everyone and their brother always play. I aimed to put surprise songs on here that are un-expected. If you are still getting to know me, then I’ll give you a hint.. I love playing out of left field. That, and challenging & delighting listeners with things they have not heard before.

ps. don’t get mad ‘that song’ is on there. it’s probably the best remix you’ve heard of it ever. so, shush.

Soultronica Vol.1 [via Okayplayer]

"dj eko", "ekogirl", "okayplayer", "soultronica"

I decided a few years ago that I would create a mix series highlighting the intersection of electronic music, soul music and  future bass. I’ve been brainstorming and collecting music at this intersection of soul+sexy+electronic music for a long time now. I really like how this series a mixture of brand new sounds complimented by forgotten, or possibly missed tracks. With Soultronica, I did one of the things I do best. I put the sexy on it. I had to get the dark and dirty out with this one. It’s as if two of my previous mixes, The Dark Sparkle and Soulife combined aesthetics. [reference “Lovestep: The Dark Sparkle”]

The boys and girls over Okayplayer like it as much as I do and just released it for Mixtape Mondays today, right in time for Valentine’s Day!

"dj eko" "ekogirl" "djeko" "NYC" "new york" "soultronica"

I stepped in for DJ Still Life on EVR when he was in Berlin last month. His show focus is “global bass music, raw beats, dubstep, glitch and other emerging forms of electronic music.” I got to step in the air-room, all to myself and lay the sexy down on WorldWide and boy, did I have a good time doing it.

Going Home

going home web

This mix is for my very beloved-bay-area-burningman camp, Laughing Monkeys. I am so excited to have motivated to make the trek out to the playa all the way from the East Coast this year. When I pull it off, imma feel like a million bucks! I want to whole-heartedly dedicate this mix I made to my camp mates. I can’t wait to be dusty with you. All of us have hours and hours to plan and fly, drive, swim, cartwheel out to Nevada. I made this for your journey. There are epic moments and quiet moments transmitted via soultronica + future bass music. I really hope you dig it.
Much love,
♥e

The People (Oakland) Live Set

I had the best time playing The People party in Oakland. I love the crew to no end. I have yet to meet a party I like better. I can’t say enough good things about the crowd, good energy and amazing dancers. Playing there is straight chicken soup for the soul. I promised some folks that I would post up a recording of my live mix. So, here it is. Soulful House I really like.

A Dedication To Somberosie

dj eko dedication web
The story goes like this, about 3 years DJ DRM (of the Bastard Jazz Crew here in NY) gave me a track called “Somberosie” by Dub Traffik Control. It has an interesting combination of electronic elements, melodies and dub vibe but is at an uptempo bpm. It hit my sensibilities in a unique way. I found myself playing this track all the time. Then I found myself playing it for my other dj friends, like “do you have anything that sounds like this? I want more of this.” I told DrM that I was so stumped over it that I would make a mix entirely built around this one song. So my hunt for similar tracks turned into me compiling music that is complimentary in vibe.

LOVESTEP, THE DARK SPARKLE

lovestepcovermedium
This is a postcard from the edge, my foray into Dubstep over the last several years. Dubstep isn’t for everybody.. It sure is won people over since I released this over a year ago. I don’t pretend for this mix to represent the entire genre. It is, like all of my mixes.. a carefully selected percentage of the genre that speaks to me. It also follows suit in not neither being strictly dubstep as well as being the antithesis of the smash-you- over-the-head robotic bro-step that is very popular in the genre. I found as I mastered it, this mix speaks from my hip hop + soul perspective strongly. I also found after crafting it, the mix was the final piece of a healing process. I’m in love with it. Watch yourself, you might fall in love too. Hold my hand, lets go.

NICACELLY – LIVING IN THE LIGHT VOL.5

Nicacelly_cover
::promotional only::
Nicacelly asked me to put together the newest mix for her Summer ’09 line. I do some crazy mixes but this, by far is the most eclectic + global concoction to date. By listening to it, you can observe my crazy synapses link downtempo to dilla, funk to brazilian, thai to salsa, dubtronic science to hip hop, rock to reggae, dancehall to marvin gaye and outkast to dubstep. I’m tickled with the outcome. It’s entertaining in a very different.. more subtle way than the Spring, Electro Yum mix that just hits like BLAM! I’m also very flattered to follow in the steps of dj Platurn and M-rock on this Living in The Light series. :::www.nicacelly.com:::

ELECTRO YUM – TURBO

Electro-Yumfinal_albumcover
The inspiration for this up tempo cross genre mix came from a night I did in the Bay Area called Music Machine (with the Bangerz-Jabbawockeez crew). They have this special night called “Turbo”. It’s a free-for-all, where all of the djs spin 115 bpm without genre boundaries. I borrowed that idea and turned it up a few notches. All these tunes register in at 125bpm. I got reports back that it’s an awesome gym workout soundtrack. lol.

Sol Du Brasil

Sol_do_brasil
This is my most universally-loved mix. I’ve popped into cocktail parties, brunches and graduation parties (with 3 generations gathered round) and found parents and friends playing this mix. I call it my Sunday-pancake-making mix, because it seems perfect for that occasion too. I made it as a tribute to Brasil, after several visits there and also after a private client asked me to dj his backyard summertime party and make a soundscape of electronic, latin and bossanova music. People ask me about the title. The party was at a property called DuMont – hence, Sol Du Brasil vs. the proper Portuguese spelling.
